Interactive Multisensory Room Principles
for children and adults with Special Needs

A Premier Solutions interactive sensory Room, sometimes known as a multisensory room, can have many different features to engage adults and children with autism SLD ,PMLD and ASD all aspects of special needs.  By following bright lights, shapes and patterns with their eyes, or pressing interactive buttons to make the dynamic sensory rich room change colour or even change colour to music or their voice, the sensory room users will become interested in their environment embracing task and reward methods to stimulate and improve their learning skills.

The choices of special needs equipment that Premier Solutions offer can be highly motivating or calming depending upto the requirement of the teaching session.

The Premier Soltuions product range is large and varied, giving us a good scope to recommend the right items for your Multi-sensory room, depending upon your individual needs, teaching methods, budget and environment. Our dedicated staff would be happy to arrange a meeting with you, to discuss your needs and ideas. We will prepare a free detailed quotation including scale 3D visual drawings of your proposed sensory room.

Premier Solutions Sensory also offer a range of sensory projection systems including interactive sensory surfaces,  "Green Screen" technology and big screen projection,. The multi-sensory room environment can be further improved to suit your particular clients by the addition of Special needs Furniture, Water Beds, Massage Mattresses, Floor and Wall Padding or Softplay Equipment.

This Premier Solutions therapeutic environment has a proven record with clients with varying difficulties from profound (PMLD) and multiple (MLD), to moderate special needs, and can be used for both stimulus and calming. Mainstream schools are now recognising the value of such a resource in education with no barrier to age or ability.

By utilising a darkened environment in the special needs sensory classroom, the coloured beams and shapes become more vivid and can be used for one to one teaching with the partially sighted to encourage the eyes to focus on a item or track the movement of the colours. In larger sensory rooms, tracking light beams can be further enhanced by the use of an optical haze machine (not a fog or smoke machine), which produces a fine mist of water molecules that act as projection screens in the air and give the beams of light a 3D effect, making the whole beam visible as a solid object as it passes through the air. All of which make dramatic changes to the multi sensory environment.

UV Ultra Violet light, (sometimes called black light) is used extensively within a blacked out sensory room along with UV reactive equipment. This is very helpful for close up one to one work.

Supervisor Controls (Sensory Control System)

Carer's Control Panel for Sensory Rooms

To give the supervisors of the sensory room control over the products located with in, an "RTP" control panel is installed. The system is designed for simplicity and ease of use; your supervisors do not have to learn how to work a computer or how to write programs.

All supervisor controls are installed in the sensory room ensuring that you never have to leave the client alone. The main control cabinet can be secured in a separate area if required.

Programs
All the programming is included in the cost of your sensory room and is custom written in line with your particular teaching methods and requirements. The programs themselves are stored in a controller that is housed in a locked cabinet that can be away from the sensory area, if you wish. Your supervisors will not need access to this control cabinet. A full backup of all of your programs is provided on a “memory card”, ensuring that you can restore the sensory system in the event of tampering or faults and giving you the independence to choose who you use for maintenance.

Switching

Sensory Switch Adjustable for Pressure for special needs sensory rooms

Client switching in the special needs sensory room can be achieved in several ways; from a simple “Press Switch” that can be adjusted by the carer to require more or less pressure, or "Pressure Pad Switches" that can withstand prolonged abuse or even jumped upon without damage. If you have existing switches that you particularly like, these can be included into your new system making familiar and proven switches operate a whole new spectrum of effects. All switches can be made to trigger a variety of programs that can change the colour of the whole room or activate a series of events.

Radio Switching

Radio Switch For special needs Sensory rooms

Another option for your multisensory room is “radio switching”. This allows the user to activate sensory effects from switches with no trailing cables. This is particularly useful for overactive users, avoiding the possibility of tripping or those users in wheelchairs. For example, a client can select the colour of a Bubble Tube or Bubble Screen and change it at will by pressing a simple radio switch.

Audio
The audio system is a very important part of any sensory room. The right type of music therapy or sound can greatly enhance the sensory experience and add a touch of magic to a session.

We never advise the use of domestic “music centres” as they are not designed for commercial use and being fully integrated, should a fault develop with the CD player or cassette player, the whole unit will have to be removed for repair leaving the sensory room with no source of music at all. Also, most music centres have no "microphone" facilities, which prevents them being used for voice therapy.
